The Joint Measurement Board (JMB) was established in 1934 to run a national scheme for the measurement of the height of horses and ponies for the purpose of description and classification of horses and ponies for competition. Ninty years later, it is still continuing, although from January 2024, British Showjumping have started to organise a separate scheme for showjumpers. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) also organise a height measurement scheme for international competition ponies.

Bell Equine has the facilities (including an official measuring pad) and certified Official Measurer, enabling us to offer a height measurement service on site at the hospital.

SUMMARY: Key points

You must bring the horse's passport to the measureing appointment.

The horse needs to be presented with with no shoes and adequately trimmed feet.

Please be advised that a measurement will only take place if your horse can be relaxed and that you may face going away without a measurement if you cannot reax your horse. Ideally your horse should be trained to place its front feet in line, and its hind feet no more than 15cm (6 inches) out of line with each other.

Owners are required to apply and pay for measurements in advance of an appointment using an on-line form available on the JMB website

We strongly recommend reading the guide on the JMB website before you start the process and double check the current rules, especially if you have a showjumper.
