Update of Equine Flu out break May 2026

Hospital bio-security update:

Due to the increasing number of Equine Influenza cases being reported across the UK — including a rise in cases within Kent and the South East — we kindly ask all clients to help us protect our patients and the wider equine community by following our updated biosecurity measures:

If visiting the hospital:

🔹 ALL horses will have their temperature taken on arrival.

🔹 Please DO NOT unload your horse until you have registered with reception and a member of our team has advised you to do so.

🔹 Any horse with a of temperature 38.5°C or above, cough, nasal discharge, lethargy, or reduced appetite should be reported to us before travelling.

🔹 Horses that are unvaccinated against Equine Influenza will need to have their elective hospital appointment rearranged until they have completed at least the first two vaccinations of the primary course.

🔹 Horses need to be vaccinated within the last 6 months, if not they will require a booster vaccination prior to admission to the hospital.

Equine Flu can affect both vaccinated and unvaccinated horses; however, unvaccinated horses are at significantly greater risk of developing more severe disease and complications.

In line with Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance recommendations, we encourage owners to:

✔ Keep vaccinations up to date

✔ Consider a booster vaccination if your horse has not been vaccinated within the last 6 months

✔ Avoid unnecessary mixing with other horses

✔ Isolate horses showing signs of illness

✔ Maintain good hygiene with equipment, clothing, and transport

✔ Stay informed with the latest updates
